IWWYANIN?!

Which obviously translates to "It Was Working Yesterday And Now It Is Not."

Before we begin, we want to be very clear that this blog is not at ALL designed to help Heritage Air Services appear when people search things like why is my AC not working, why is my HVAC blowing warm air, why is my thermostat set to cool but the house is still hot, or why is my air conditioner making weird noises.

That would be incredibly strategic and we simply don't operate that way.

However, if you did happen to Google something like that and somehow ended up here, then while we've got you, here are a few extremely random and toootally coincidental reasons an HVAC system might stop working.

Purely educational.

Is my air filter is clogged?

Ah yes. The classic.

If your HVAC system is running but it ain't blowing cold air, there's a decent chance the air filter's clogged.

Here's a fun little equation for y’all:

A dirty HVAC air filter restricts airflow.
Restricted airflow means the system's working harder than it should.
When that happens, cooling performance drops and the house starts feeling reeaally warm.

People often search things like:

  • why is my AC running but not cooling?

  • why is my HVAC not blowing cold air??

  • why is airflow weak from my vents???

Again, purely coincidental that those highly specific search phrases just happen to appear in this blog.

Replacing the air filter is one of the easiest HVAC maintenance tasks there is. Takes about 15 seconds.

And yet you all skip it.

Tsk tsk.

Why is my thermostat not doing what I want it to?

STRAIGHT AWAY: your thermostat is probs part of the problem.

Most people ask Google…

  • How do I know if my thermostat is set to fan instead of cool?

  • Has my thermostat’s battery “unalived” itself? (can’t say the D-word or Google’ll flag us)

  • My thermostat temp is changing but my system isn't responding

  • Why is my thermostat reading the wrong temperature?

Before assuming your HVAC’s failed, check the thermostat’s settings.

Happens more often than you'd think.

Is my outdoor unit dirty, blocked, or both?

If the AC condenser outside is covered in sheet (sorry, we can’t swear but you know exactly what we mean: leaves, mud, mulch, grass etc.), then yes, your system may struggle to release heat.

People often search things like:

  • OMFG why is my AC constantly running?

  • Why isn't my AC cooling the house??

  • WTF is my AC blowing warm air???

Yay another fun equation:

If the outdoor condenser coil is dirty, the system can't release heat properly.
If the system can’t release heat properly, cooling performance drops.
If cooling performance drops, the system runs longer trying to catch up.
If the system runs longer trying to catch up, your bills increase.
If your bills increase, you lose money.
If you lose [too much] money, you declare bankruptcy.
If you declare bankruptcy, you lose your house.
If you lose your house, you move in with your parents.
If you move in with your parents, you regret literally every life choice that led you here.

Cleaning the outdoor unit and keeping the area around it clear helps more than most people expect.

It really does!

My breaker tripped!

It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it happens.

Common searches:

  • My blasted HVAC unit is not turning on

  • My AC won't start

Check the electrical panel first. Sometimes it's simple, sometimes it's not.

Low refrigerant

If the AC's running but the house STILL isn't cooling, it could be your refrigerant. Or lack thereof.

Searches that lead here:

  • AC blowing warm air

  • AC running but not cooling

  • HVAC not cooling house properly

Low refrigerant usually means a leak somewhere in the system. This part absolutely requires an HVAC tech.

Frozen evaporator coil

If your AC isn't blowing air or your airflow’s dropped, the evaporator coil might be frozen.

Searches that usually lead here:

  • AC frozen coil

  • HVAC airflow suddenly stopped

  • Air conditioner iced up

Frozen coils often come from restricted airflow, dirty filters, or refrigerant issues.

Step numero uno: turn the system off and let it thaw.
Plan B: figure out why it froze so it doesn't happen again.

Your system is older than you’ll admit

Another possibility: parts just start wearing out.

If you're searching:

  • How long does an HVAC system last?

  • When should I replace my AC?

  • Is it worth repairing an old HVAC unit?

You’re asking the right questions, friendo!

Most systems last 10-15 years depending on usage and maintenance. After that, repairs show up more often.

Does my system need routine maintenance?

Seasonal HVAC maintenance prevents: sheeetty airflow, dirty coils, worn components, and unexpected system breakdowns.

It ain’t thrilling. No one wants to schedule it.

But it does prevent the exact situation that brought you here.

If you searched things like why is my HVAC not working, why is my air conditioner running but not cooling, or why the house feels warm even though the AC's on, we hope this extremely coincidental list helped point you in the right direction.

And again, just to be clear, this blog was absolutely not written to show up in Google search results.

That would be suspiciously effective.
