Homeownership 101
Listen up, Buttercup. Class is in session.
Alright. Eyes forward. Phones down.
Today’s lesson: Homeownership
Let’s walk through what just happened to your life.
You’re the one responsible now.
There’s no onboarding. No training manual. Just you.
Now. Quick question for the class.
When a lightbulb goes out, who fixes it?
If you said “the landlord,” I need you to stand up and leave. Respectfully. This is not your classroom anymore.
It’s you. It’s always been you.
Let’s try another one.
Your AC starts making a funky noise. Who do you call?
Not your dad. Not Chat.
You call Heritage Air. You call a professional.
Now here’s where things get fun.
Remember renting? Remember how something would break and you’d disassociate. You’d send a slightly passive aggressive text to your landlord. And then a man named Steve would appear and everything would be fixed.
But you’re a homeowner.
You’re Steve now.
Let’s talk about filters. I can see your eyes drifting. Stay with me.
Your HVAC system has a filter. That filter needs to be changed. Not when you feel like it. Not when you remember. On Schedule. And regularly.
When was the last time you changed it?
Don’t answer that.
Here’s what happens when you ignore it…
Your system crashes. Your air quality drops. Your HVAC breaks. And your energy bill goes up. Probably.
Cause and effect. This is a lesson. We want you to pass.
Now let’s address the noises.
Every home has ‘em. Creaking. Dripping. Rattling. Clicking. Humming. Whistling. Banging. Tapping. Popping. Scraping. Knocking. Clanking. Hissing.
A drip means something is leaking.
A rattle means something is loose.
Hissing means air is escaping.
Sounds are tell, y’all!
Alright, we’ll end with a recap exercise.
When I say “homeownership,” you say: “I’ll change the filters, I’ll schedule the maintenance, I’ll fix the small stuff before it gets expensive, I’ll call the pros when it’s out of my depth, and I won’t pretend problems will sort themselves out.”
The whole thing. Ready?
HOMEOWNERSHIP
…
Again. HOMEOWNERSHIP
…
Good.
Now go be Steve.
Class dismissed.
