Your Uncle Larry Is NOT an HVAC Tech (& Other Family Fix-It Fails)
We all LOVE Uncle Larry.
He’s the king of the cookout, a firm believer in elbow grease, and a “man of many trades.” Or so he says.
But let’s be honest, if his toolbox consists of duct tape and WD-40… maybe don’t let him near your HVAC system.
We’ve seen some things, mkay?
A return vent sealed shut with painter’s tape.
A furnace filter installed backwards.
And the dreaded “quick fix.” #FamousLastWords
Not all heroes wear tool belts. And some shouldn’t wear ‘em at all.
Signs your family handyman might be in over his head:
He says, “How hard can it be?” (Harder than you think, Larry).
He’s watching a tutorial from 2011 by someone named @HVACHacker69420.
He’s said “should be fine” more than once.
Or “well, that’s never happened before!” (usually before he breaks something).
Why DIY and HVAC don’t mix:
Aside from some super serious HAZARDS (like carbon monoxide leaks or electrical fires) DIY repairs can also:
Void your manufacturer’s warranty
Cause bigger, more expensive problems
Get flagged during home inspections
Tank your system’s efficiency
And Uncle Larry ain’t coming back to fix it when it breaks again. He’s too busy re-roofing his shed. In the rain. With a stapler. Oh Larry.
Final Thoughts:
We know it’s tempting to let a well-meaning family member take a crack at it. But HVAC work isn’t guesswork. It’s precision, expertise, and yeeeears of training.
So before anyone even utters the words “just tinkering,” run for the hilliest of hill, and give us a call. We’ll handle it the right way the first time.
Need help undoing a DIY disaster?
We’re your guys, and we look pretty damn good in a tool belt. (Uncle Larry could never)!
