Is Your Heater Okay?

There’s not much worse than walking into your home expecting warmth and getting hit with indoor chills instead. If your heater is struggling, it will usually give you a few clear signs before it completely shuts down. Here are the most common things to look out for so you can catch issues early and keep your home comfortable.

1. Your Heater Is Blowing Cold Air

This is the most obvious sign something is wrong. If your heater is pushing out cold air, it could be a problem with the ignition system, a clogged filter, or a thermostat issue. No matter the cause, cold air from a heater is your signal to get it checked. It’s a heater, not a fan. It has literally one job.

2. Strange Noises

A healthy heater runs quietly. If you suddenly hear rattling, banging, clicking, or anything out of the ordinary, there is likely a mechanical issue. Noises almost always mean something is loose, worn out, or on the verge of calling it quits.

3. A Burning Smell That Doesn’t Go Away

A short burst of dusty smell at the beginning of the season is normal. Anything stronger or longer lasting ain't. If you smell burning plastic, burning metal, or anything sharp and unusual, turn the heater off and call for service. Like, right meow.

4. Your Energy Bill Jumps

If your usage hasn’t changed but your bill climbs, your heater may be running longer than it should to try and keep up. This usually points to clogged filters, poor airflow, or a system that's losing efficiency and working harder than it needs to. Trust and believe, friendo, your bill shouldn't be the first thing alerting you that something's wrong.

5. You Keep Adjusting the Thermostat

Y'ALL! If you find yourself constantly bumping the thermostat up because the heat never feels quite right, your heater's probably struggling to maintain temperature. This is a super obvious sign that you need your heater repaired or a full furnace tune up.

6. Some Rooms Are Warm Whilst Others Are Freezing

Uneven heating is common when there are ductwork issues, airflow problems, or a weak blower motor. If your home feels inconsistent from room to room, your system likely needs attention. You shouldn’t need to pack an extra jumper just to walk into the guest room.

7. The Heater Runs Nonstop

A heater that never shuts off is not running efficiently. This usually means it cannot reach the temperature you set, so it keeps running without ever catching up. This should be checked quickly, before it becomes a bigger issue.

What To Do Next

Ignoring these signs can lead to unnecessary headaches, sky-high utility bills, and a heater that decides to retire at the least convenient time. Usually in the middle of January when everything's already inconveniently cold.

Heritage Air is here for heater repair, furnace maintenance, HVAC tune ups, and full heating system replacements as and when you need them. We keep things simple, honest, and straightforward.

If your home feels colder than it should, it’s a great time to schedule a quick inspection and get your heat back where it needs to be.

As always,
