5 Essential Maintenance Tips For A Smooth Running Air Conditioner (Part 1)

Air conditioners are an essential household item. They regulate the temperature and ensure a comfortable living. ACs have quite a lot of usage and sometimes run 24/7. Hence, it is important to keep them in good shape and conduct regular maintenance. A well-maintained air conditioner will give you no trouble, utilize less energy, and will have reduced operational costs.

If you live in a hot and arid part of the country, you cannot afford to have AC breakdowns during the summers. The heat will be unbearable and let’s not forget the cost of repair. The good news is that you can keep your AC in good condition and keep it running smoothly by carrying out basic maintenance yourself.

In this article, we have brought to you an easy AC care and maintenance routine. So read on.

1. Examine the Thermostat

  • The first thing to do is to examine the thermostat to see if it is working and maintaining the requisite temperature at home. Sometimes, the thermostat trips and malfunctions. It can be replaced easily. If you have a mechanical thermostat, we recommend you buy a smart thermostat. With a smart thermostat, you can set the temperature higher when no one is at home, rather than just switching the AC off.

The smart thing about this thermostat is that you can program it to start cooling the home about 30 minutes before residents start coming back to the home. Smart thermostats ensure that you will come to a cool and comfortable house.

2) Clean or Replace Air Filters

  • Air filters are an important component of the unit. If they are dirty and have debris stuck to them, the efficiency of the AC will be reduced. Hence it is important to replace them once every month during high-use seasons (summers and winters), or clean them with the same frequency if you have reusable filters.

Air filters are located in the following places:

  • At the back of the return air grille on a wall in the central room of the house.

  • Inside the blower compartment of the furnace

  • On the top, bottom, or side of the furnace

The air filter cleans the air that circulates through the air conditioning unit. It traps dust, debris, and allergens such as pollen. The filter can become choked with pollutants and needs to be cleaned. When the filter’s passageways are blocked, the airflow decreases, and the AC has to work harder to supply you with cool or warm air.

  • Along with that, air passing through dirty filters will have more dust and more content and the air supplied by them will not be healthy to breathe in.

3) Clean the Outside Unit

The outside unit is exposed to different elements of nature such as leaves, dirt, and grass clippings. These elements can become embedded in the outside unit of the AC and lead to reduced airflow. Hence it is important to clean the outside unit from time to time. To do so, perform the following actions:

  • Disconnect the power.

  • Wash out the physical debris with the help of a garden hose. Place the hose at a slanting angle of 45 degrees and start washing the outside unit from the top and work your way down.

  • Don’t apply too much pressure while washing the outdoor unit or the delicate fins of the coil will be damaged.

  • Trim any shrubs or plants that may interfere with the flow of the unit.
